getting and sending gmail with imail

i have a gmai land would really like to use imail but don't want a .mac account, i had a .mac account and wasn't pleased with it and the cost.
i have optumum online cable services
Or perhaps i could start a imailaccount by itself but not sure how to configure it
i'm running 10.3.9 on a 17" g4 imac.

Don't you mean Apple Mail? I've never heard of iMail.

To use Apple Mail with Gmail, setup Gmail to allow POP access (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13273) and add a POP3 account to Apple Mail (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13275).
