getting audio off camera

I need to do some off camera audio videos to post on youtube.
I bought from ebay a

4Pole 3Ring 4conductor 1/8" M-F
TRRS iPhone 4 headset 3.5mm extension cable 10FT

I plugged in my mic ran the video camera, started recording and audio is still being recorded by the phone and not by the externally connected mic.
what did I do wrong? is it a specific type of mic that needs to be connected?
