Getting back lost songs!

Okay so I download a pretty good amount of music from iTunes, but I've updated my iPhone and I lost all of those songs. I guess there was a way to backup all that but I'm not technically savy so I didn't know haha. Is there any way to get those songs back without having to buy them all back?

Open iTunes on your phone and click on the "purchased" tab and download them again?
