Apps Getting Channels and ATV4 to work like traditional remote

I am trying to get my parents who are older to use ATV4's and channels instead of the cable boxes they are renting now.

My Dad took to it well on his TV's, but my Mom still needs something like an old remote control. I have a universal remote control I can program that will handle all the tv stuff. The big problems is switching channels in the channel app.

Is there any way to program buttons on the a universal remote to switch channels with the up and down buttons?

There isn’t, but if you get a harmony remote, you just need to hit the down button and it will bring up the channels.
