Getting classic Macs online

I just stumbled upon this guide to getting an ancient Mac online. I knew that my Mac Plus was useful for something!

I did this years ago on a MacPlus with a dialup account but discovered that MacTCP v2.0.6 would reliably crash.

Downgrading to MacTCP 2.0.4 fixed that problem but I never discovered exactly where or why this conflict occurred.
