Hey folks!
I've been trying to read through the various threads here, and I really haven't found any answers yet to these specific questions.
I "inherited" a 5.1 Creative Labs speaker set (complete with boom arm kit) from a friend. Now I'm faced with the impetus of getting a Dolby 5.1 or better box. My two computers are a 1.5GHz PowerBook G4 15" and an iMac G4 15".
My questions are as follows:
1. In general, how well do the various "external box decoder" solutions actually work?
2. Is USB 1.1 suitable for pushing Dolby 5-, 6- or 7.1 or AC3 to a decoder box?
3. I have heard that Turtle Beach was supposed to make some good hardware. I've contacted them and they state that they don't directly support the Mac, but that their hardware can be generically used with Apple's Audio/MIDI Setup utility. Does anyone have any experience with this?
4. Apart from Turtle Beach, does anyone here have any experience with any of the other solutions? If so, is there anything even remotely resembling a consensus of opinion as to which brand and/or model to buy? Any ones to specifically stay away from?
Thanks in advance!
