Getting iMovie to recognize a digital camera?

Is it possible for iMovie '08 to directly import videos from a digital camera? It would be easier to do this than go through iPhoto. Thanks.

It has to be a camcorder iMovie is compatible with.

I don't think cameras that can take video clips count though, and that most likely can only be done the roundabout way.
