I'm about to add a new line to my account, and figured I could use that line to get the iPhone 5 subsidized. This is how I'm planning to do it:

Line 1: main line (mine), not eligible for upgrades
Line 2: eligible for upgrade
Line 3: not eligible for upgrade
New line: the line I'm about to add to my plan for my mom. She will only need a feature phone for phone calls, which I have plenty.

Since AT&T hasn't announced their pre-order for iPhone 5, I'm gonna pre-order it through Apple tonight before it runs out. I'm pretty sure I can buy a subsidized iPhone through Apple by registering a new line. So my question is, when I receive the phone can I transferred it to my own line, and take away the data plan from the new line? Will AT&T do that?

Based on history, yes. No problems doing this in the past.
