Getting iPhone replaced/fixed without an apple store

I live in the great state of south carolina which has no mac stores at all.

If I bring my iPhone into AT&T for repairs do I lose my phone until they send me a new one or what?

AT&T does not do repair or handle repairs at all for the iPhone. Its part of their deal with Apple.

Pull the sim card out with a paper clip and put it into another GSM phone.
