I've paid off my iPhone 8 Plus and yesterday asked t-mobile to unlock it.

I received an email today saying to wait 48 hours then do an iTunes backup and restore.

That seems a bit of a pain as I have a lot of music that is going to take a lot of time to backup and restore. I also don't remember doing that when I unlocked a Verizon iPhone a few years ago.

Anyone know if there is any alternative?

Thanks,
Nicholas

The alternative is simply inserting a different SIM and seeing what happens. If you are asked for your Apple ID, the iPhone is unlocked. If it says 'Invalid SIM' then it's still locked.

The directions in the email haven't been relevant since 2011. While restoring through iTunes IS a way to check it's mainly for if you have no SIM at all to test with.

So…no need to restore. Just insert a different SIM and test.

I have unlocked many iPhones from T mobile and this by far is the easiest way to unlock your phone. Just borrow a SIM card from a friend or get one for next to nothing on amazon and you are good to go. Just pop it in then follow the prompts.
