I have lots of life photos that I want to transfer to my Mac. When I do it through image capture they just become .jpg files. How can I transfer them so they retain their motion?

Thanks.

After importing through Photos on the Mac, what do you export it as?

I just leave it in the Photos library for archive / storage and to keep the original "Live" version

To Export - I am using Photos 4 in Mojave (not sure if the same in earlier versions?) - you can choose "export unmodified orginal" in the file menu - it will export as a .mov file
