Getting messages on watch but not on phone

if your wearing your watch and your phone screen is off, the notifications automatically go to the watch only. if you take the watch off, they will revert to the phone.

Can you not see the messages at all in iMessage on your phone or are you just not getting notifications on your phone? The former would be a pretty odd issue. The latter would be exactly how the watch is supposed to work.
