I had been storing all my music on an external Western Digital HD. It looks like the HD has died on me. I can't get anything off it even though the imac acknowledges it and shows the folders.

I also put all my music onto my appletv. Is there anyway i can transfer all the files back to my imac from the appletv. I'm hoping there is a way to do this, otherwise most of my music may be lost.

I'm not sure I can trust external HD's anymore

I recently messed up my itunes library and had to do this.
Go to this site and download the program... (depending on windows or osx)
http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/

Use pretty much any usb drive with the program and plug into the appletv.
Anyway, this enables SSH on the atv.
Then use.....
http://cyberduck.ch/
or windows use...
http://winscp.net/eng/index.php

This is an ftp program to access the appletv. Find your ip address from the general settings on the atv
Ip: 192.168.0.x (or whatever it is)
Port: 22
User name: frontrow
password: frontrow

Browse to the media drive and copy over your music. It will all be in files named ABCD.mp3, EFGH.mp3
Dont worry about that. When you copy over to itunes it restores the song names using tags.
Took a few hours over wifi, but got back all 30gb of music.
