Getting out of a spinning beach ball situation.

I have some instances where I can go to a website on my rMBP and get a seemingly endless beach ball with no way to exit. So far my solution to this is just to shut the computer down and reboot. I'm not sure that I'm doing the best thing though when I do that. Are there other options for dealing with the endless spinning beach ball?

Just force quit safari then relaunch it holding the shift key
