Getting out of message typing to see who conversation

When typing a message, I can't double tap the conversation to minimize the keyboard. I have to go back out of the message and back into it to see the whole thing. In WhatsApp I can double tap to hide the keyboard.

Am I missing something? I see no "done" button or something to similar effect.
