I'm using VNC Server v6.2.0 on a 2017 iMac (18,3) running Sierra 10.12.6. The Mac is connected wirelessly only thru an AirPort Extreme router. I'm accessing remotely over the internet using an iPad or an iPhone. VNC Viewer works as intended when the Mac is awake. VNC Viewer will also wake the Mac from display sleep (but not any deeper sleep). VNC Viewer, however, cannot get past my screen saver if it's running.

Is there a way around this (other than the obvious, turn off the screen saver)? Would hardwiring the Mac to the router fix this issue? Would hardwiring the Mac to the router also allow me to wake it from a deeper sleep remotely?
