All,

I have an iphone 3GS with updated IOS4 software. When I enter a text message conversation, the phone displays the conversation on the full screen. If I tap the new message bar, the keyboard pops up as expected. the problem is that I can't get rid of the keyboard once it is displayed. This is frustrating because most of the message thread is cut off due to the keyboard. How do I get rid of the keyboard if I just want to read the thread and not type a new message?

Just tap the top left button to get back to the list of recipients and then re-select the one you want to view. Annoying workaround, but it works.

That ^

Or you can click 'Edit' to hide the keyboard and go back to full screen.

I often to this so I can read though a message i'm replying to.

I've been having a similar problem.. whenever I'm typing a text message and then click the button to go back to the main text message screen, the keyboard stays there. But it's not even a fully functional keyboard, you can't type on it or anything. It's just there.... The only way to get rid of it is if I click on another conversation and then again go back. It never happened before though so I'm wondering if this is a glitch in the software or if it's just my phone. I'm worried cuz i dropped it a few times recently =/ Anyone else experience this?

Same thing happens to me, but it's just so minor I don't care about it.

Had the same problem here. Deleted all my texts, closed the texting app, killed it from the "multitasking ribbon", then re-opened and sent a text - voila, keyboard was gone.

Hope that helps!

You may have figured this out already, but you can also get rid of the keyboard by swiping downwards on the texts above. You can then swipe upwards starting from the text input box to bring the keyboard back. (I know this works on ios5. Not sure of previous iOS versions)
