My old MacBook is still running High Sierra very happily, but now I've got this big download in Applications and a nag notification to upgrade that won't go away unless I click on "Details". I don't need to - or want to - upgrade, so can anyone tell me how to get rid of the notification and stop the thing from downloading itself again? I've found various hints on the net, but none of them seem to work, and it seems unfriendly (to say the least) not to have a "no thanks" option to stop it bugging me.

After deleting the Monterey download from your application folder, go to System Preferences, Software Update, Advanced, and remove the checkmarks that you do not want. If you do that, you will have to check for updates manually for apps.

there were reports here last week from mostly Mojave users
that Monterey slipped through the cracks and found a way into their computers
even with everything "update" turned off.
we are safe as long as the OS stays put an does not launch.

You would think that Apple's updater would be smart enough to know if my iMac wasn't capable of being upgraded to Monterey and would stop prompting me to do so...
