I have several "lists", and I like to tell Siri to add things to those lists - such as "Siri, add butter to Walmart list" and she does. However, I can't get her to understand the word "Menards" and so I can't create a Menards list (local home improvement store). I've seen ways online to teach Siri names in your contact list, but I can't find any discussion of how to get Siri to understand a word that is NOT a contact. Is there some way to do this?? The only workaround I can think of is to always mis-pronounce it as "Mine-urds", but I'd rather have a better solution. Thanks.

I think if u keep saying it everday for a few days, it will try to understand it after a few days... It's difficult to make it understand a new word which is uncommon.. I mostly type it out after speaking it..
You cannot make it to learn a word.. Only contact names

New, and I didn't know I could do that--:)

Where are your lists, in the stock Notes app?

I use Evernote for the things you mentioned and have Categories for Groceries, Target etc. I can use the Mic on the keyboard within EN. But, just using Siri would save a step or two.

Will see if that works. :)
