Getting some OS X discs

I need some OS X discs to reinstall the OS (when I boot, it gets stuck at the grey Apple screen). It's for an iBook that has no AppleCare. Could I just make an appointment at the Genius Bar and ask for OS X discs? Or would I need AppleCare? What have been your experiences? It can't be Leopard because I have a G3, so Tiger or Panther...
