so I plugged an electric guitar into the line 1 jack of my duet for the first time. it is recognized by gb and the maestro software but there is no sound coming from my speakers? I am probably just missing something stupid here but thanks for any help...

It would appear that you have not sorted out your monitoring properly?
Also, don't guitars output closer to mic level than line level? I mention it because if you plugged the guitar into a line level input on the Duet, it may not be able to crank the gain up enough for you to hear anything. How are the input led's on the Duet reading, plenty illuminated when you play, or no?

As for monitoring, you can either do that via Maestro, which will be pretty much entirely lag free (Low latency) or via your recording application. Which may produce some latency depending on the spec of your Mac and software settings. You'll have to check the manuals for that though, as I don't really use GB or Logic.

Guitars output line level signal (exactly line level). A DI Box will convert it to mic level.
