Getting system alerts to play over Studio Display speakers

I cannot get the sound effects and alerts to play over the Studio Display speakers. Screenshots of settings are below. Could it be due to both being usb devices?

I have an M2 Pro Mac Mini running Sonoma 14.2.1

That should work. Do the sounds play through your dac or nothing?

Nothing.

Nothing. But, if change the volume level in System settings > sound or the alert sound, I hear it through the Studio Display speakers. But only when doing these things in the System settings. Never when there is an actual alert.

So I toggled all the settings on and off, unplugged everything, including an external DAC and speakers, then restarted my Mac and plugged everything back in. For some reason the song change alerts work now. Weird. The computer has been restarted many times since they stopped working.
