getting to the menu bar using the keyboard?

Hi,

The one feature I miss the most from Windows is being able to bring down the menu bar using alt-SomeLetter. Is there an equivalent mac way of doing this? I am aware of crtl-F2 but I am looking for something that gets me closer to the menu I wanted to be in in the first place.
