Getting to the newest mail in Mail

When using Mail I have a problem.
If for example I search for and then view an old email, I cannot get to my most recent email without scrolling to it.
For example if the old email is from say January I then have to scroll up through 200 odd messages to get to a new email just received.
There must be a quicker way, what am I missing?

I do not want to appear to minimize your distress, but I can move through 500 messages in Mail with one flick of my fingers on my trackpad. That said, you can move to 'top' and 'bottom' with Command-Option up-arrow/down-arrow.

BTW Flicking only gets me through 10 or so messages
