Currently have a 2010 MP with

AMD R9 390 4GB
16GB RAM
3.46Ghz 6CORE
All SSDs

Have tried DVD Fab, Sorensen squeeze and now handbrake - all cause my mac to sound like a vacuum cleaner almost (75c / exhaust & intake around 2400rpm) and takes a while - maybe 1+ hour for a 5min video - I know HEVC encoding is much more intensive than h264 but is there anyway to make it both quicker and quieter? Takes about 55mins for a 5min50sec video - on 'fast' encode within handbrake

Would a gfx upgrade improve things or will this only be improved with a new 2018+ computer?

Any suggestions on upgrades for this welcomed - maybe more ram?

Handbrake won’t use hardware encoding at all.

All other software can only utilise quicksync at this moment (except on the iMacPro), which is not available for cMP.

I haven’t try the RX580 hardware encoding yet, don’t know its quality, but my 1080Ti’s hardware encoding ability is amazing. 10x faster than CPU encoding, the GPU can still stay below 50C with idle fan. It can encode two videos at the same time, and deliver over 100FPS (in total) of high quality 4k videos.

However, no such functions exist in macOS yet. I do all encoding in Windows now.

It seems the upcoming 10.14 will activate the RX580’s hardware encoding ability, but no guarantee yet. At this moment, only hardware decoding is working in latest 10.14 beta. But I am still very optimistic about hardware encoding is on the way.

HS run so well on my cMP now, I was lost of interest on 10.14. Especially it should break lots of stuff on cMP (e.g. Handoff). However, I will go 10.14 once official launched solely because it will allow me to use video hardware decode (and most likely hardware encode as well).

In any case, R9 390 can’t provdie any HEVC hardware encoding. It only has VCE 2.0. To utilise HEVC encoding, you will need a VCE 3.0 (or above) GPU. e.g. R9 380.

Anyway, if you never clean the heatsink and the fan, you better do it. I live in hot Asia. And with a clean heatsink. My cMP never run above 78C with only 1300-1400 RPM (intake / exhaust). Still some fan noise, but not that annoying.
