After a botched repair by my local Apple service centre, which they even had the cheek to charge me for, as they said that just reloading the OS due to corruption was chargeable not covered on Applecare (who had originally diagnosed an SSD or SATA adapter hardware fault after hardware test was run), I had to reload all my backed up data and apps. This included Office 2011 Pro, which I further updated to 14.4.8.
I now have a ghost email in my Inbox, which is invisible other than showing "1 unread" on the folder in the side bar and on the dock icon. I have run every bit of first aid I can think of. This included force emptying the folder, declaring all as read in the folder, moving all the deleted mails into the Inbox and the re-emptying, emptying the deleted folder, rebuilding the identity, repairing file permissions, checking for SSD errors, resetting the PRAM and SMC, emptying caches and so on. I only have POP accounts on Outlook, as I choose not to receive my iCloud IMAP mail there.
The ghost is still there.
Any other ideas folks?
