I have a set of files on my computer whose names and extensions I changed manually. The renamed extensions work for my purposes. Except: two particular files (out of hundreds) are found if I perform a search in the finder toolbar or in Searchlight for files whose type is the old extension. Most files with the same (old) extension which I changed to the alternative extension do not show up under this search, which is set to search on my entire HD with no restriction other than file type. But these two files do show up, with "ghosts" of their old names and extensions. Does anyone know why this can occur, and how I can prevent it?

To be super-precise about what is happening: the "ghost" file shows up in the finder toolbar search window under its old name and extension when I perform the search by extension type (simply typing in the extension including the dot). It just looks as if that old file is there. But, in the bottom of the finder window, the "path bar", where I have it set to show the entire path to whichever file is currently selected, the file appears as it should with its new name and extension, as indeed it does if I navigate to it directly in the finder window. If I try to do "quicklook" on the item in the finder search results, quicklook interprets it with the new filename and extension. It is only in the search results that the file appears with the old name and extension. Also in Searchlight, the "ghost files" appear, but When I changed its name and extension, I did it manually, if that makes a difference.

I have tried re-indexing the volume with Searchlight and rebooting the computer. The "ghost names" for these two files still occur. By the way, kind of embarrassing, but this machine is still on 10.7.5. Thanks for any advice.
