Does anyone know how I can save an animated .gif on my MBP that was sent

Saving in the normal way should work, but the only way that I can get one to play properly is to open it with Safari.

Yes actually I should have said saving it in its original format,. The guy that sent it to me sent it via a pc and its funny I noticed animated images will save in its original format in pictures on a Samsung which I have , which is Android but not in Apples photo app!
