Gifted Ipad... upgradable?

hello,

I will be receiving an Ipad as a gift. I was wondering if it were possible to somehow upgrade it from Apple once received. If i do not open it, and go to an apple store, is it possible to get a slightly different ipad?

There shouldn't be an issue if you have the receipt. If purchased from Apple, you have 30 days to return it no questions asked.
