Gifted Music on Itunes

A friend of mine was told that someone gifted him some songs on iTunes. However he did not receive an e-mail or any other notification.

How do you redeem gifted music? In his account I do not see anywhere to claim any music. Would the e-mail have contained a code like a gift card?
