My friend recently got a 60Gb Gigabeat and he says its better than the iPod 30gb. The things he has going for him are: price and storage. He also says that the iPod has poor sound quality. Is this true? I need some pros about the iPod to prove him wrong.

Pros about the iPod: Video playback 3.5 hrs compared to Gigabeat 2.5
More accessories
.1-inch bigger screen
Supports multiple photo formats

I think he's right.

Pros of the gigabeat:
not so fragile (no scratched up surfaces)
better video support (supports vongo rental video)
better interface (more dynamic and flexible)
cheaper (60gb is going for $299)
screen is higher res
can rotate vertically and horizontally for optimal video viewing

so it has its own things going for it. Why must everything be a competition to prove the iPod is somehow better?

my point is

is not a big deal for most people, u get it?

Maybe he/she meant that this is a MacR- and not a WinR-site so most people will say KNOCKOUT!!!!!!, because >95% of the people here don't care for a product which is restricted to Windows and have more or less no idea what to say about the Gigabeat S.

But we will see.

Lack of Mac support is a realistic gripe; plenty of non-iPod MP3 players have Mac support, so why not the Gigabeat?

Gigabeat is mp3/video player, I didn't find many of them (Zen, Sandisk, Zune etc) spt mac other than iPod.

iPod has a clickwheel and can view lots of different types of photos and can download photos right to it with an optional accessory!

>95% of this world's mp3 user are using windows. plz be realistic.
This is a deciding factor for me right here. I can't even use the damn thing on my computer? Seems like I pretty big con.

I can't be more realistic than my actual real-life situation. In which I use a Mac.

yeah, me 2, i would go buy a gigabeat/zune if they spt mac, lol, but face the reality, they probably don;t care about you and me anyway, or, for now.

The Gigabeat supports the Plays For Sure stores, correct? If that's the case... then if purchasing music or videos is at all important... it's a dying product, as Microsoft is unlikely to continue to dote on PFS now with Zune out.

But don't worry about proving him wrong. Purchase what you want based on what you want to get out of it.

yeah, thats the biggest problem about Zune too, I expect M$ to open it if they are serious about compete in this area.

Still, it is clearly a knockout. iPod owns the market, at least for now.

I know, but competition is good thing, I sure would like iPod to add build-in FM, larger screen and WiFi in next version. that would be nice.

Pros of the gigabeat:
better interface (more dynamic and flexible)

I found this to be such a silly comment i had to register just to respond :D

First things first... are you drunk? .... No?

Have you taken ur medication this morning?.....No?

Did you lose ur thumbs in Nam losing ur ability to navigate an iPod?..... yes u say?

Ahh soz dude that explains it : /

Better Interface? Laugh out Loud tbh :p

I think he's right.

Pros of the gigabeat:

better video support (supports vongo rental video)
works with iTunes Store music
better interface (more dynamic and flexible)

screen is higher res
can rotate vertically and horizontally for optimal video viewing

Let's contrast.

Pros of the iPod:
It's prettier
better video support (supports iTunes video... sorry to disagree, but this is subjective)
better interface (i love the click wheel)
screen is same res, and slightly larger (sorry to break it to you)
better battery life
works with Macs
has more accessories available
has higher hard drive capacity

Let's contrast.

Pros of the iPod:
It's prettier (I don't care, as long as it works)
better video support (supports iTunes video... sorry to disagree, but this is subjective) (I hate iTunes video because I think it's overpriced for what you get.)
better interface (i love the click wheel) (clickwheel is neutral for me, being able to rotate to landscape mode is a bigger deal for me)
screen is same res, and slightly larger (sorry to break it to you) (too bad it's a huge pain to get video on the iPod, while the gigabeat supports WMV video, which is easy to rip.)
better battery life (up for debate. They're actually pretty equal.)
works with Macs (don't care, don't use one for my music, irrelevant to me)
has more accessories available (All I need is a headphone jack to plug into my car stereo, and some would argue not having a plethora of $30+ cases available is an advantage)
has higher hard drive capacity (don't care, I'm not going to listen to all 28GB of my music at once and don't want it all with me. I do fine with an 8gb nano, actually. This isn't really important. But until the introduction of the 5.5G they had equivalent 30 and 60gb capacities)

Buying electronics needs to be about what meets YOUR needs. If you don't want a gigabeat, then don't buy one. I don't understand why everything has to be seen as something available for trouncing by the iPod. Just like if you don't like gay marriage, don't get one- if you don't like the gigabeat, then don't buy one. I don't see why we have to discourage everyone else in the free world from buying one just because the apple fans among us don't like them. It really just makes everyone seem even more like rediculous fanboys.

And yeah, I use Windows. I'm here because I use a mac in my labs but use windows personally...and the gigabeat works a heck of a lot better with media center (including syncing my recorded TV shows with no hassle! something the mac and iPod can never do) than the iPod does.
