what's the difference between all the different ram companies? what sets each one apart and which ones are good? i'm so lost with this..

Well, since RAM is platform independent, it all comes down to price/quality ratio.
 
All true but even so when cheapest 1Gig stick is like 500+ why bother now, new PC laptopa which us eit are out now so prices gotta drop over the next couple of months.

has the exact same parts that Apple uses. I bought the 512MB dimm from them and the Samsung part # was identical. The 1GB Dimm is a little pricey however.

The shopkeeper-guy at the embedded Apple BicBic store said Apple was buying up all the supply of 1GB dimms (which was limited as it was), so that the price should come down once Apple stops buying or Samsung can ramp up production - until then it's $300 for 1GB (2x512) or $1200+ for 2GB (2x1024).
