Giving my 4S to family in Brazil...If unlocked, can they get service??

I would like to give my 4s to family that lives in Brazil. If I unlock the phone, can they get service through one of the countries major carriers?

If so, how do I go about unlocking (1st time)?

What carrier is your 4S locked to?
If you unlock it they can use it with any gsm carrier in the world.
