I was planning on giving my old iPhone 3G to a friend as he broke his old phone and has 2 months to go until his upgrade. The phone was on O2 in the UK and was unlocked officially by O2 when they started offering this in 2009.
My question is though, does it need to be his sim that activates the 3G in iTunes or can I pop mine in from my iPhone 4, with micro adaptor of course, activate it and then he can pop his sim into the iPhone 3G and the phone should already be activated. Just to be clear both sims are for O2 UK and the iPhone 3G was on O2UK.

Is he paying for the "correct" plan and everything? If so, he should just be able to do it with his SIM, I'm not sure why you would want his phone activated with your SIM.
