Has apple ever used this glossy black plastic on anything but the iPhone?(The 5th gen. iPod doesnt count.) Maybe this is apple's new thing. The black is what they are advertising the most, with the iPods they always showed the white one, same with the macbooks. Maybe their new saying will be "Aluminum is passé, Glossy Black Plastic is In." lol.

what advertising?

You know, how they always show the white not the black. Like on the front page.

I think this had to do with the confusion. You contradicted yourself here. As far as going to glossy black, not sure if they are going that way or not, but I think it will be more popular.

i meant like on the front page of magazines or like when the white ipod was on the front page. sorry.

Okay that makes sense. It does seem black is becoming more prevalent. I think consumers like it best, so Apple is catering to them. Look at the iMac... came out in an iPod like white, now is the aluminum with black back.

it just seems odd that they're offering the white version as the "premium" model, so to speak. for example, the iPod nano- you can get it only in silver in the 4GB version, but to get colors, you have to buy the 8GB model. The black MacBook is more expensive than the white MacBooks. They've always offered black as an option, but at a premium. Now black is the standard, and you can only get white if you get the 16GB model... just seems a bit odd.

But, no, I don't think Apple is trying to say plastic is in, aluminum is out. They've been trying to portray themselves as a "green" company, and aluminum was helping them do that. If anything, going with plastic almost seems like a step backwards in that regard, even though it yields a better overall product since it's supposed to help with signal strength.

Why doesn't it count?

Perhaps you meant to say apart from the 5th gen ipod. :)

That's what I was wondering, lol....

and I think it may be because before the white was the cheaper, now the black is. They're showing the cheaper model so they can advertise a lower price.

the 1st gen nano's also came in black and white with the same kinda gloss.
it's not really new, just becoming more "standard" for apple now instead of the trademark white.
it's all black and silver in 2008 :D

The white option is only available on the 16GB model line,
for one simple reason ...

... To make you opt for the 16GB model instead of the 8GB model.

Apple knows 'white' is a hit colour. Look at the iPod prior to 2007.

I am completely undecided on whether to replace my original iPhone with a 16GB black or white version. Decisions, decisions. Perhaps they will not have one or the other when I get to the store, that will make it easy.

black will only be available with the 16gb version, as for the white you get that with every 8gb version. you guys got it the wrong way round.
