I’ve tried to get it to work a year ago but couldn’t figure it out. I even tried thunderbird but still couldn’t figure it out. I’m probably doing something wrong.

I believe Gmail requires app passwords now. If you have not created one for the Mail/Thunderbird apps, you'll need to create one.

If you do that and it still does not work, then IDK.

Not had my iBook booted up for a while and discovered today that my gmail isn't downloading through Mail

Anyone still able to access gmail using mail on Tiger OS?

If you mean Mail retrieving/sending Gmail e-mail via IMAP/POP3, just be sure to open Gmail on a browser and go into your account settings.

There is a security toggle buried there which must be manually enabled to allow “less secure” applications, such as older applications not using the latest TLS/STARTTLS, in order to retrieve and send Gmail via a third-party application. (Mail, in this case, is considered by Google to be a third-party application.)

Once that toggle is selected (Google, last time I did this, insisted this wasn’t “as safe”, but for the time being, they’re allowing it), you should be able to use Mail, even in Tiger, to retrieve e-mail from Gmail.

One note of caution, however: if you check your e-mail via Mail or another e-mail client infrequently, such as less than every few days or perhaps a week, Google will automatically revert that toggle setting for your account back to prohibiting third-party applications using older, less-secure methods for authentication. It’s a hassle requiring one to repeat the above steps.

The easiest and fastest way to access Gmail on Tiger is just to run the html version in Safari. You do have to enable less secure systems in order for it to work, and in my case I also needed to disable 2 step verification. But it’s really fast, honestly faster than the slow retrieval of the Mail app.
