I have an iPhone 5S running iOS 8.4 on AT&T and I am using the Gmail app. I have it configured to show a popup notification whenever I get an email.
The popups are frequently very slow, sometimes showing up 10 minutes or later after I get an email. I just went into the Gmail app manually and looked at my new emails. Then 5 minutes later, I saw popups for the emails that I already read.
I remember the notifications being slow when I was using the default Mail app too.
