Is there a way to make the badge on the gmail app to show only new messages not all the messages in my inbox. I hate seeing 949 messages when really I have already read them.

Is there a way to make the badge on the gmail app to show only new messages not all the messages in my inbox. I hate seeing 949 messages when really I have already read them.

I don't know if this explains it but they number of messages appearing in the badge appears to be reflective of unread messages throughout your account, not just in the inbox:

Badge app icon: Have a red dot will appear above the Gmail app's icon on your home screen, showing the number of unread messages you have in your Gmail account.
