Not sure which forum would be best for this question, but since the problem started with my new iphone 6 on IOS 8, I'll give it a shot here.

I have used Gmail contacts, calendar and mail since my Droid days. Got an iphone 4 and used Exchange to synch to the phone. It's all worked correctly (even iphone 5, though I know I read it should not after Google stopped supporting it) until I restored to my new iPhone 6. No Gmail came through. And the contacts did not appear to be updating. So I set my Gmail and Contacts up through the Google option instead. It all seems to be working. (Left calendar on exchange because it's synching perfectly on phone, ipads and Macs for whatever reason) But then I saw the option for CardDav. How is this different from the synch I am doing through the Google link under Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars? If CardDav is a must, why is it working with Google?
Thanks for your insight.

^ What he said, however I couldn't seem to get it to work on my new iPhone 6 with iOS8 at all, even with identical settings to my iPhone5/iOS7. Even though it setup correctly with all the check boxes and said it was successful, it wasn't until I actually added a few contacts on my Phone I realized they hadn't come across to my Gmail contacts. In the end I switched back to just syncing them with the Gmail account option, which is working fine.. no need to over complicate things IMO.

I agree! Much simpler with Gmail account option. Also, even though it is not push ( fetch), whenever you open up either calendar or contacts on either mobile device or desktop gmail, syncing will occur immediately. No need for push for calendar or contacts.

Appreciate the replies. Glad to know that Gmail synch is working for many of you. I, too, wish to keep it simple. I just thought I might be missing something if I did not use CardDav and CalDav.

gmail and contact pushing stopped a long time ago.

now, just use the add a google account to sync your google contact. This way you are sure to get all of the contact info.

my old iphone5 can push contact but it limits the number of entry/phone numbers per person. now with apple's default method I can get all 10+ numbers from one contact.

Last I checked, CardDav is better. It syncs custom fields and syncs all emails/numbers/addresses/&c. Whereas the google sync has limits on the number of things it will sync, and will sync some custom fields as "other." regardless of what they are named in gmail. This may have changed, but was the case a year or so ago.
