Gmail doesn't sync everything in Mail

For example, is there a way to have mail tell gmail that I've already seen this e-mail and mark it not new?

I would also like to know how to have gmail's spam folder emptied without going to gmail.com and have it sync with apple mail.

This is a commonly discussed issue, and I don't think it has been resolved

actually, i figured it out, i switched from pop to imap and everything follows each other's action.

the only quirk is that in apple mail they set-up another inbox called gmail which mimics the main apple mail inbox.
