typo in title: help me GO WITH iPhone!

I’m a Google fiend it seems. The three applications that I use the most on my Blackberry are Blackberry Messenger(BBM), Gmail (native app), and GChat (native app). I’m considering either switching to the new iPhone or the HTC Droid Incredible. I’m pretty fond of the iPhone so please help me with this decision.

BBM isn’t available on either device so no point in discussing it. Gmail is super important to me. I like being able to star and archive my emails. I also like being able to search through my old gmails that are 10 months and have them come up quickly. Same thing with searching through thousands of my contacts. Can someone tell me how I can get this functionality with the iPhone email client? Is there a way for me to pull up my old gmails through search or do something similar to archiving and starring? I know some people will say just create a shortcut to the Gmail site and put it on your home screen. However, that doesn’t help with email notifications.

Also, currently, all my school email forwards to my gmail address. Then I have it set up so that outgoing mail appears to come from that school address when it’s actually coming from Gmail. Will this functionality continue to work on the iPhone?

Secondly, is GChat. I know there are options such as BeeJive and IM+, but how reliable are they?

THANKS!

P.S.- I had a question about multitasking on the new iPhone. I have an iPod Touch now. If I’m in a game (let’s say Tap Tap Revolution) and I press the home button, the game quits. When I return, the game has to load up fresh. Is it like this on the new iPhone? Does hitting the Home button (a single time) pause the app and let me return to it later in its paused state? Thanks.
