Gmail for iOS has been updated to version 2.7182, adding an iOS 7-style redesign that gives the app a cleaner look on the iPhone. The redesign also includes additional features on the iPad, such as a new navigation bar that can be used to switch between categories and accounts in landscape mode.

The iPad has also received better scrolling along with email composing and viewing in full screen mode while the iPad is in portrait mode.

MacRumors has advertised Google's products so effectively, I've genuinely just switched to Android.

Can't wait for version 2.7183

Rumors are floating around there will be an interm version 2.71825 that will include changes such as:
  • Shift from dark red to dark dark red
  • Spinning color wait indicator will now rotate 5% faster
  • Hambruger menu icon replaced with picture of a hamburger

Can't try this until I get home but so glad to see that the whole screen can be used for viewing messages in portrait mode now. That was frustrating!

Background refresh, yes! It's all I care about.

I think it was already incorporated.

BUT WHY IS THE ICON NOT FLAT. I don't know why google insists of adding some "depth" in their icons. Makes it look out of place on my phone.

No, it wasn't. It supported push of course, but it still only actually downloaded email when you launched the app. Really surprised they didn't mention it in the patch notes, the difference is night and day. Previously, if you went into settings, background update, there was no toggle for gmail. Check out the screenshot from my yet to be updated old iPad 3 with the old version installed.

Since getting a 5S and losing ActiveSync support that ended on new devices since Jan, I've really missed using the default mail app (which I've always preferred), which no longer supported push for Exchange accounts. Been using the gmail app since, which supports push out of the box but no background update, so had to suffer the pain of it having to download the email only when you actually opened the app. Admittedly more of an iOS issue prior to iOS7, but still, glad there's now a much better gmail experience on my iPhone/iPad.

Oh thats weird. Since I upgraded to iOS 7 when a new email comes in, my phone would light up and it would show on the lockscreen but once I would read the email from my comp, it would automatically mark it as read and the notification would gone. This was on the iPhone if it matters.

Yeah, but that's more to do with push I think. You'd get a partial preview of emails and it would update read/unread status, but it wouldn't actually download the email in readiness so it's there the moment you open the app. Not much of an issue when you're on wifi or have a good signal, but even then there'd be a pause upon opening the app as only then does it download the email. If you only have one or two unread it'd be quick, but it was really noticeable when you've got a pile of unread emails, and especially annoying if you try to read email, from maybe 20 minutes earlier, and you've got no signal and it's not preloaded.

Ah that makes sense. I was attributing to background sync because it was actually making the notification (both on the homescreen and the badge) disappear once I read it on my comp.

Unlike hangouts where even though I read the message on the comp, the message would still persist on my phone until I actually go into the hangouts app.

Aah right.

I'd rather still use the default mail app to be honest, but having push for so long it's hard going back to fetch. I could use an iCloud address to get push again - not too keen on that idea though, not entirely convinced by Apple's cloud credentials and too entrenched with gmail across multiple platforms - or possibly set up some convoluted forwarding mechanism, but that comes with it's own pitfalls/foibles I seem to recall.

Anyway, no need now as the gmail app is suddenly a whole lot better :)

I still prefer mailplane.

I just deleted the app on my iPad which I've been using since day 1. Wrote a 1-star review as well.

I almost exclusively use the Gmail iPad app in portrait mode and to have to constantly slide the email list on the left open & closed to read and browse emails. Horrible design and extremely inefficient!!! Until they make it an option I'm done with that app. The mobile web version functions just like it used to so I'm stuck with that for now. No notifications, though.
