I currently have my gmail account set to forward and archive, sending all my gmail mail to my mobileme address. i noticed today the option in my mobileme settings to check another email using pop.

my question is, what would be the difference between having gmail forward my mail and accessing it using pop? and is there an advantage to one over the other?

I couldn't get the POP access to work from my Gmail so I use the forwarding instead, it's not doing anything that POP wouldn't do

supposing the pop were working, would a pop service have an advantage to simply forwarding the mail?

i guess forwarding would be faster as gmail would instantly send it to my mobileme as soon as it arrives, while with pop, me.com would periodically check my gmail account for mail. i don't know if that's how it works or not, but it sounds right.

From what I have seen, MobileMe will periodically check Gmail for mail using POP. The advantage of POP is you can often control whether messages are left on the server etc, but Gmail also gives you this same option when forwarding.. having used both I do not see any advantages to POP over forwarding in this case, they both seem to provide the same results, and it seems that forwarding is faster because anything that comes into my gmail account is essentially 'pushed' immediately to mobileme
