GMAIL HELP: Old emails won't stop coming

How do I set the email on my iphone to only download new emails? Everytime I delete new ones they keep pulling old ones to replace them. Its quite annoying. Help....

FYI I set it to only send new emails from inside gmail and that doesn't seem to work...

ive also got this problem with hotmail on my iphone

keeps pulling through 50 old emails at a time, and theres over a 1,000 in my inbox

anyway just get the new emails coming through and not old?
