Gmail in MS Exchange can't display foreign languages??

I have my Gmail account set up through Microsoft Exchange on my iPhone.

When I get emails from people writing in Japanese or another language using different letters or characters, I can see what they write in the preview but once I open it, it's garbled with boxes and what not.

What's up with that? :confused: Is there a way that gets around this?
