Google has updated its Gmail app for iPad to add long-awaited Split View support, meaning the app can now be used in Apple's multitasking split screen mode alongside another app.

Google announced the introduction of Split View support in a blog post, saying the feature is available now to all users.
When using an iPad, you're now able to multitask with Gmail and other iOS applications. You can use Gmail and Google Calendar at the same time with Split View to check your schedule before replying to an email to confirm a meeting time. Or, you can easily drag and drop pictures from Google Photos into an email without leaving Gmail.
Before you attempt to use Split View, make sure multitasking is enabled on your iPad: Launch the Settings app, go to Home Screen & Dock > Multitasking and select Allow Multiple Apps.

To use Split View when the Gmail app is open, bring up the Dock with a short swipe up from the bottom of the screen, then touch and hold another app icon and drag it up, over to the left or right edge of the screen, then release your finger.

Gmail can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

I find the ads in the Gmail app quite jarring. When the default email app is workable and apps like Outlook are free, I don't feel the need to go into the Gmail app very often.

I have not seen a single ad in Gmail Apps on my iPhone or iPad? 🤔

Now I just need a MacOS client and am good to go, kissing AirMail subscription goodbye.

Anyone knows a good Mac App that supports GMail, has an Unified Inbox and works with the GMail snooze (not implementing its own)?

Maybe gmail split view just finished rolling out, but for me split view was actually added in the same version that introduced dark mode.

edit- I just went back and checked. It was exactly a month ago that I received split view. It was when dark mode had finished rolling out.

What version number are you running? I can’t even find dark mode 🤨

EDIT it kicked in after restarting the app even though I just downloaded it.

For me they show in the "Social" and "Promotions" tab. Two adds in each, looking just like other emails although marked with "Ad".

Still no keyboard support (arrow keys and delete don’t work on iPad), guess I have to stay with AirMail still :p

It still doesn’t work for me, what am I missing? Yes I updated the app.

/edit Notice how the text isn’t padded on the right, it thinks it’s still full width of the iPad and the interface is displayed as such.

Tried to find out when Split View was announced, found an article from 2015. This is why I don't use Gmail. I don't care if they have better spam detection etc, I don't want to wait 5 years for basic system features.
What do you use instead? I can’t live without snoozing (temporary archive) which keeps my inbox nice and tidy.

I don’t know why apple don’t make these features requirements for app store eligibility.

Facebook... still no dark mode after a year.

Gmail - taking however long this has been.

Don’t get me started on “sign in with Apple”.

You can't mandate develops add every feature. Sign in with apple for example won't work for every type of app. But this feature, split view multitasking is now required as of June 30th.

It's not as easy as people think it is too add multitasking to every app. Apps with more complex UI's require a fair bit of adjustments to be made as the app is scaled.

AirMail works on iDevices and Mac, they have their own snoozing system, though. And gotta pay for it, even tho I already pay for GMail 😔

Well yes, but then you also disable it on the web. And I prefer keeping promos out of the main inbox.

Why do people still use Gmail? I don’t trust google at all maybe enlighten me why your trade your privacy for a subpar product.

The title should read:

Gmail iPad App Update Finally Adds Support for Split View Multitasking

Seriously. It's so bizarre how some of their apps would support multitasking but something you would think would certainly have it (Gmail) didn't until now.
