I was excited to use the gmail unread message count lockscreen widget when it got released.
However it only seems to display when the phone is unlocked making it pretty useless really...

Is there a way to enable it to show unread count when the phone is locked?

I had the same question. The widgets have a big grey area when the phone is locked. Not sure if I have a setting wrong or if this is just the way it is.

Same goes for fitness and few more. That’s sadly how Apple protects privacy… which is stupid implementation for me

I understand the privacy issue, but the fact that I have 2 new messages isn’t a privacy concern for me or most people. They should be able to implement this better.

Exactly.
It's just a number being shown.

The official calendar and reminders widgets show details which would be a far higher privacy concern than the number of unread emails I have!

I wonder if this is a misconfiguration by Google that causes the iPhone to grey it out? Or if this is an iOS issue. But there are plenty of other 3rd party widgets that don’t work this way, so I’m assuming it is Google who needs to fix this.
