My MacBook hard drive died on Saturday. Since then I've been booting from a cloned back-up. The back-up is 10 days old, so ten days-worth of e-mail I had downloaded to Mail on my dead drive is absent.

I have Gmail archive all my e-mail once Mail has downloaded it (POP), so the e-mail still exists intact. Now I want to download what's missing to Mail.

When I launched Mail for the first time after the crash, the e-mail I'd been sent since the crash downloaded, but, as expected, the previous ten days worth did not.

So I logged on to my Gmail archive via webmail, checked (as in put a little tick in the box) all e-mail that was absent from Mail, selected 'Move to Inbox', and then 'Mark as Unread'. Perhaps in my ignorance, I expected this would have Mail believe it was e-mail it had never downloaded, and Mail would thus download it. But it didn't.

Does anyone know what I need to do to have Mail download the absent e-mail?
