Gmail not functioning on macbook

About once a day, when I open my gmail account, or click on it via the gmail widget, it opens up, but the links aren't "clickable", or I will open it and it will say "loading..." at the top and never do anything else.

*Sometimes* if I close it and open it again it will work, but most of the time I have to restart.

Why is my gmail so finicky??

Strange, I use 3 gmail accounts pretty much all day every day, and I rarely have any trouble connecting.

Are you using safari?

Are you on a generally good internet connection?

Have you tried using gmail via IMAP using Mail.app?

I am using safari.

The connection is good. Gmail is the only website I have this problem with. Actually, last night a friend was here and had the same problem with aol mail.

Ashamedly, I don't know what an IMAP is.....
