Gmail not working with Mac Mail

For some reason over the past 24 hours, my mail has suddenly stopped connecting to Gmail. I deleted the account (stupidly) and now, when I try to add the Gmail account back into Mail, it refuses the account even when I know the username and password are correct. Any ideas? Not aware of having done anything in either Mail or Gmail that might have caused it.

Currently running version ver 4.5 in SL.

Enable IMAP within the web interface for GoogleMail (in the settings menu) and then follow the set up instructions from here.
